Carl Hammer Gallery says…

CJ Pyle's portraits, drawn in ballpoint pen and colored pencil on the inside of old LP sleeves, gather up the most peculiar bunch of wooly humanoids to appear in a while. With all the logic of a dream, their heads consist entirely of bundled twists of hair (or possibly skeins of yarn) punctuated by knotted outcrops of brightly colored flesh. Pyle perfected his technique over many years, during spare moments while working first as a rock musician and later as a commercial illustrator, but he kept his personal creations to himself until 2006. The new figures on view (2007-09) all stare out impassively, tight-lipped and almond-eyed, but each feels like a unique character with its own psychological stamp.
