David Corbett has shown his paintings at 65GRAND before, but the enamel-dipped sculptures in his latest outing are a new addition. As with a proper cocktail, this final ingredient brings out the others, heightening the complexity of the whole. Whether working with brushstrokes or pieces of wood, Corbett takes an architectural approach, piling up straight lines in structural ways. But this is rogue geometry in action; order and chaos are constantly elbowing for position. Oil paintings present claustrophobic views of geodesic structures gone awry, while watercolors deposit bundles of soft lines on white pages. Meanwhile, the sculptures animate the key dynamics: there's a play of colored surfaces and angular shapes, a give-and-take between clutter and open space.
