Brilliant but ripe for parody, Werner Herzog tends to get pegged as the fanatical maverick of the German New Wave — you know, the guy who pushed a steamboat through the jungle, proudly ate his shoe, and recently chased down the odd characters living at the end of the world. But let's not forget Herzog's vampire movie, 1979's Nosferatu the Vampyre, a super-stylized, generally gorgeous remake of F.W. Murnau's silent-era classic. Starring frequent collaborator-antagonist Klaus Kinski, it's one of the great director's works that all-too-rarely finds its way back to theaters. What better time than now to reacquaint ourselves with Werner's wonders, as we wait for his Rogue Film School to materialize nearby.
