David Bazan, formerly of Pedro the Lion, hasn't been alone in staking out a spot for Christian themes at the indie-rock table (Sufjan Stevens and John Darnielle have pulled up chairs, too), but he's played a singular role in grappling with doubt as a counterpoint to faith. Then came a spiritual crisis, a tumble into the bottle, and the breakup of his band. Bazan's first solo LP, the excellent Curse the Branches, reflects on these battles and his full-on split from God. He's a first-rate songwriter partly because of his capacity for keen reflection and barbed honesty, which he aims at himself throughout the new album and at his one-time convictions in smoldering tracks like "Hard to Be."
