Abbas Kiarostami's elliptical and often self-reflexive films may still polarize audiences — he's a proponent of "unfinished cinema," requiring viewers to fill in what they will — but the Iranian director is undoubtedly one of the world's great filmmakers. Ten, released in 2002, marked the beginning of an increasingly minimalist path for Kiarostami, though the humanist in him shines through. The movie was shot solely with two digital video cameras fixed to the dashboard of a car, one aimed at the woman driving and the other at the various people who land in her passenger seat. Their conversations and gestures are the heart of the film, which circles around the fragility of love and the restrictions facing women in Iran.
