Other than the Big Black chapter in Our Band Could Be Your Life, the Chicago scene has found itself largely written out of most punk histories. (In American Hardcore, the Second City barely earned even a perfunctory once-over.) Screening tonight in celebration of its DVD release, You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-1984 gives the locals some long-overdue respect. Focusing on classic acts like Naked Raygun and the aforementioned Steve Albini-fronted noiseniks (as well as numerous less-hyped but still fondly-remembered originals like the Effigies and Articles of Faith), You Weren't There offers archival footage and testimony from the DJ's, fans, and musicians who really were there. We are punk-rock fly-over country no more.
