When summer settles in Chicago, it's natural to feel like the season is the reason we live here. It's fleeting, of course, and when Doug Ischar photographed the gay beach scene at the Belmont Rocks in 1985 — teeming with sunbathers in defiantly plain view — he was fearful that that idyll, especially, couldn't last. AIDS was devouring lives and society at large was far from taking embrace, so the fate of queer culture seemed momentously uncertain. In a blow to remembrance, the city demolished the Rocks in 2003, making Ischar's color photographs an all-the-more important record of the moment. Golden is publishing the series (seen in full for the first time), the closing reception for the exhibition doubling as a catalog-release party.
