Depending on your perspective, Fever Ray's atmospheric, electronic drone is the perfect soundtrack to either a spacey daydream or a chilling nightmare. On her first solo project away from the Knife, Fever Ray's Karin Dreijer Andersson layers day-job-similar beats over harpsichord and strings, flecked with synthesized chirps, woodwinds, and organ. The effect is at once cold, rowdy, and organic, with Dreijer Andersson's voice — often vocoder-modified — charging the emotionally abstract lyrics. Though not the height of accessibility, Fever Ray is a lot like a firecracker going off in an abandoned warehouse: loud and a little dangerous, but undeniably fascinating.
