Facets Cinémathèque says…

Benjamin Christensen's 1922 silent flick Haxan may not be the first thing that comes to mind at the mention of Halloween, but its vivid imagining of Satan and atmospheric look at witchcraft more than fits the bill. Horror lovers and film buffs alike will appreciate the Swedish/Danish classic — a combination of documentary-style montage, Medieval/Gothic creepiness, and wry humor. Its graphic content was controversial enough to be banned in the US and heavily censored elsewhere at the time of its release. The event includes a live, heavy-metal score composed specifically for tonight's screening and a discussion with Facets staff about on-screen representations of Satan.
