Gene Siskel Film Center says…

Director Mohsen Makhmalbaf proved eerily ahead of his time when his film Kandahar premiered in May 2001. Based on true events, the searing drama follows Canadian-based journalist Nafas (Nelofer Pazira), who returns to her native Afghanistan to prevent her oppressed sister from committing suicide. While Kandahar is not flashy, its cinematic restraint should not be confused for a lack of polish. Makhmalbaf's use of non-professional actors on-location in the Middle East creates a sense of urgent realism and gives a human face to women's plights in a Taliban-dominated land — so well that TIME magazine named this Iranian New Wave gem one of the 100 best films ever made.
