"I don't know how you can be President," Ronald Reagan said, "without being an actor." Dancemaker and director Peter Carpenter began My Fellow Americans with the Teflon Prez in his crosshairs, but as the process unfolded, found himself constructing a performance about the people for whom the '80s were midnight in America. A deliberately diverse cast performs scenes as visual subtitles to some of Reagan's most telling speeches, while whip-smart musical choices and meta-theatrical framing keep one foot planted in the present. Carpenter has a knack for ripping off the husk of reverence — My Fellow Americans puts a Reagan mask on the man himself.
