Museum of Contemporary Art says…

Taking a new angle on Italian art since 1968, Italics ruffled a few feathers last year when it was first mounted in Venice. Curator Francesco Bonami says the substantial 75-artist exhibition tells "a story, not history", but it's still a revisionist project of sorts, taking a swipe at Italian critics' stock narratives, looking beyond influential movements like Arte Povera, and inviting sidelined artists into the circle. That's not to say big names are missing: the exhibition begins with Maurizio Cattalan's sheet-draped bodies carved from white marble (All, 2007), and some canon-friendly figures (Fontana, Pistoletto) are pleasantly represented by works we don't often encounter. Still, it's the lesser-known figures, from veteran Carol Rama to relative newcomer Roberto Cuoghi, who make for an interesting discussion.
