It's often said that only a thousand people bought the Velvet Underground's first album, but everyone who did started a band. In a like vein, the Pixies were far more influential than popular during their brief, spectacular run about 20 years ago: their catchy pop hooks, intelligent eclecticism, and loud-soft-loud arrangements set a template for everyone from Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins to Weezer. There's cognitive dissonance in seeing the underground darlings all grown up and reunited on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, but if the Pixies haven't earned the mainstream exposure, no one has.
