Doc Films' retrospective of movies by native Chicagoan Michael Mann continues with what is arguably his best work, the unconventional cops-and-robbers thriller Heat. The film (which Mann wrote and directed) is both a fist-pumping action flick that bounds from one loud, super-slick set piece to another — armed-truck robbery, bank heist, chase scene — and a complex drama that interweaves the personal and professional lives of its characters. But at its core is the riveting tension, and at times oddly tender interaction, between its two leads, De Niro and Pacino. They are really playing themselves, or rather, their personas (Pacino in particular really hams up the explosive-tempered/world-weary thing that is his signature). While it's far from perfect, Heat is, thankfully, self-reflexive enough to overshadow its flaws.
