"Art-design" pieces lead a thorny existence: they aim for both artistic significance and consumer practicality, and, critics argue, often fail at both. This personality crisis, as Alice Rawsthorn wrote in The New York Times, "distracts attention from [design's] overriding mission of building a better world, not ditzier chairs." Enter Konstantin Grcic. His mix of humor, material experimentation, and utilitarian efficiency walk that line as well as anyone, making him a fine choice for the Modern Wing's first exhibition devoted to a single designer. Decisive Design features some of his best known pieces, like the Compasso d'Oro-winning Mayday Lamp (available through the Museum Shop) and the sleek, soccer-ball-patterned Chair One.
