Open Books
213 W Institute Pl
There was already plenty to love about Open Books and its numerous literacy programs and mentoring initiatives; now it's also launching what promises to be one of Chicago's best used bookstores. The nonprofit took over a big, bright space in River North (formerly a kitchen-fixtures showroom) and is filling it with over 45,000 volumes. Most books are going for half the original cover price, and rumor has it that the shelves even boast titles (your Murakamis and Bolaños) that don't often get passed along for a second life. If getting first look isn't incentive enough to attend the grand unveiling, the two-day kickoff also includes readings and discussions featuring Joe Meno, Claire Zulkey, and others.
