They are probably the only living cartoonists who could headline the 3000-seat UIC Forum: the Simpsons, Futurama, and Life In Hell creator Matt Groening and artist/author Lynda Barry (Ernie Pook's Comeek, Cruddy, and last year's crazy-inspiring What It Is). The two Evergreen State College alums are longtime friends and creative kindred spirits (Groening cites Barry as "probably his biggest inspiration"), and it's easy to find aesthetic and thematic similarities in their work, particularly a love of the absurd. Tonight's attendees are encouraged to engage in impromptu readings of work by Fred Milton the Beat-Poet Poodle before being seated. Or come dressed as Disco Stu.
