Ian Frazier had already gained a legion of fans as a regular contributor to the New Yorker's humor page by the time he published Great Plains in 1989. Mixing personal narrative and exhaustive historical research, that cherished travelogue of the American West foreshadowed the "creative non-fiction" craze by nearly a decade. (No surprise, Sarah Vowell claims it as one of her "Books That Made a Difference.") For tonight's Chicago Humanities Festival event, Frazier reads from an array of pieces, including selections from the new essay collection The Lamentations of the Father — which recently netted him his second Thurber Prize For American Humor.
