The art of Juan Angel Chavez is like a collage of a forgotten side of Chicago, bringing fragments of the streets into carefully crafted pieces. For this solo exhibition, Dragging The Leash, Chavez evolves from where he left off with his multi-layered street-side installations — gathering found materials to create light boxes, encapsulated sculptures, and other collaged pieces. His affection for industrial materials is ever-present, as he often mixes strategically cut plywood with seemingly random items like construction cones. In part a tribute to the city's homeless population, the transformation of readily identifiable components conveys an impressive sense of survival.
