An impressive if somewhat theoretically unoriginal show, Picturing the Studio examines the artist's space as a site of fantasy, myth, production, and especially performance. Many of the pieces consider the studio as a stage for the artist-as-role-player, and it's hard not to get the feeling we've seen these ideas before; but what the show lacks in conceptual novelty it makes up in the scope and scale of eminent artists, where pieces range from documentation of works in progress to installations of studio spaces — almost all focusing on different ways the studio is fetishized. Highlights include Joe Fig's intricate scale models of artists like Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman at work in their studios and hyper-self-conscious videos about art making by John Baldessari.
