A fictional cinematic biography that weaves fantasy with universal themes of identity and alienation, Broken Embraces might be Pedro Almodóvar's most personal to date. Spanish director of brainy art films, Mateo (Lluís Hom) becomes "Harry Caine," when he is literally blinded by an illicit love affair. Lena, a former call girl and aspiring actress (Penélope Cruz), struggles to escape the clutches of her benefactor boyfriend in order to realize true love. Spanish film darlings and Almodóvar favorites Chus Lampre and Rossy de Palma make priceless cameos, and while the narrative in no way resembles Almodóvar's own, his characters recall his oeuvre, leaving audiences to wonder about the essential parallels between the film's protagonist and the iconic auteur.
