Back in the olden days (read: 1990s), there was a strange abundance of face-melting, Midwestern post-rock bands with martial-arts-inspired monikers (Sweep the Leg Johnny, Five Deadly Venoms). But Chicago's 5ive Style, with their ridiculously tight Sub Pop funk, was top of the experimental heap — kung-fu-core or otherwise. Ex-Stylists Bill Dolan (guitar), Ryan Rapsys, and John Herndon (rotating drummers) have now teamed up with bassist Karl Ropp for Dasboton. We missed their Chicago unveiling a few months back, but their pedigree and demos have our mouths set to froth. The vets kick off a four-week, Sunday-night residency at the Hideout tonight. Go and remind yourself how much you missed this kind of thing.
