Romanian cinema's breakout moment began almost five years ago, but if Corneliu Porumboiu's new film, Police, Adjective, is any indication, that rising star isn't about to flicker out in the night. The director's second feature follows an undercover cop given the trifling assignment of staking out a pot-smoking high-schooler. As the officer refuses orders to arrest the kid, the film becomes an examination of ethical dilemmas and the traces of totalitarianism. Shot in long takes and without dialogue in many scenes, the going is intentionally slow, immersing the viewer in the business of police work. Immersing it is, though, and Porumboiu infuses bleak realism with dry humor, which seeps out in the absurdity of semantic discussions.
