Altogether Mutable: The Work of Mary Lou Zelazny
Spanning nearly 30 years, the skillful paintings in Mary Lou Zelazny's mid-career retrospective center on a cast of weird creatures, shapely women, and figures made of found image fragments. One of the exhibition's main gratifications comes in following along with the Chicago artist as she explores possible fusions of painting and collage; many of her works smoothly integrate magazine clippings as if they'd been swallowed whole and digested, and as Zelazny adjusts her approach over time, she continues to find a fluid synergy in the combination. Now that seamless Photoshop constructions are commonplace, and mix-and-match-style assemblage is one of the primary artistic M.O.s of our day, a real survey of Zelazny's work feels well-timed, her angle pleasantly different.
