Although blockbuster exhibitions often reaffirm melodramatic clichés about tragic artists, the Art Institute of Chicago attempts a "myth-busting" show with Becoming Edvard Munch: Influence, Anxiety, and Myth. Curator Jay A. Clarke attempts to overcome the usual narratives about the Norwegian symbolist artist's tortured psyche, instead demonstrating that Munch was a savvy businessman in full command of his profession. Clarke thematically organized 150 paintings and works on paper by Munch (and a few of his contemporaries), including The Scream. Although the anxious sentiment of that iconic painting might have been heartfelt, it also reveals how the painter was keenly aware of how to manipulate his audiences.
