French director Claude Lelouch's 1966 variation of Noël Coward's Brief Encounter won two Oscars (for Foreign Language Film and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay). Anouk Aimée also garnered a Best Actress nomination for her performance as Anne, a young widow who befriends race-car driver Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) after a chance meeting at their children's school. The film's combination of black-and-white and color footage is gorgeous to look at, but the score, by Francis Lai, is the real star. This afternoon, Alliance Française screens the romance with wine and an après-film discussion with resident francophile Jim Spiegler.
