Antiwar auteur Andrzej Wajda's three-part study of wartime Poland's ruin and reclamation culminates in its hypnotic hypotenuse, Ashes and Diamonds. Somewhere in Poland on the last day of World War II, Zbigniew Cybulski is assigned to assassinate a carpetbagging communist, but en route encounters a beautiful barmaid offering a life of love. A black-and-white gem with a cri de coeur ending, this atmospheric masterwork captures a human footnote amidst the historical enormity.
