Director Pamela Tanner Boll's nuanced documentary investigates the "burden and joy" experienced by women who balance their art-making practice with their lives as wives and mothers. Boll profiles five contemporary artists who struggle to create in the studio amidst the still-prevalent expectations that their chief responsibilities are, instead, in the home — with varying degrees of outward "success" and personal consequences. She juxtaposes her subjects with vignettes on feminist art history, and avoids a dusty Women's Studies lecture by exploring each artist's motivation, process, and the overwhelming evidence that their creative fulfillment makes them better mothers and role models for the next generation.
