Since 1997, Toshiki Okada has been creating dance/theatre works out of Japan; in 2005 he received the 49th Kishida Kunio Drama Award (the Japanese Tony) for Five Days in March. An ensemble of seven performs subtle movements as English translations of the spoken Japanese text float over the action, via supertitles, in a nod to the blissfully ignorant operatics of a young couple. Shacked up in a Shibuya hotel room in early 2003 while Japan is preparing to enter its first military conflict since WWII (the US invasion of Iraq), the couple prefers to lock this serious backdrop outside the hotel room door, hibernating instead with a supply of booze and each other's carnal company.
