Phaiz says…

Richard Colman's star is on the rise, thanks in part to eye-catching exhibitions with fellow artists who grew up on graffiti or street art, such as Dalek and Shepard Fairey. For his first solo show in Chicago, the San Francisco-based artist covers the gallery walls in large murals, some painted on-site, others assembled from smaller panels. Colman's recurring figures take their places — stone-faced characters, bright rainbows, severed limbs for a hint of the macabre — but they're immersed here in colorful, densely patterned environments. Two sections painted on six-inch tiles push the balance even more towards sensory impact, rearranging Colman's compositions into fractured, rattling arrays of colors and shapes.
