If your best friend spent a fortune on an all-white painting you hated, could you bite your tongue and praise it, or would you risk the relationship by sharing your honest opinion? That's the premise of Yasmina Reza's Art, a 1998 Tony winner now playing at Steppenwolf Theatre. Despite all the art theory and humorous byplay, it's really a meditation on friendship — specifically how much we're willing to swallow in its name. Reminding us that we've all been on both sides of this dilemma, Steppenwolf ensemble member Francis Guinan spends half the run playing the buyer, and the other half as the hater.
