Evening-length triptych Saudade — from New York-based choreographer David Roussève — is not minimalist. The title, Portuguese for "the love of something in its absence," ties in to stories Roussève describes as a "gumbo" of spoken text and global dance forms, as well as video and modern movement. There are ties that bind, however; the piece's characters all inhabit the American South, past and present, and the predominant musical environment, Portugal's fado, aptly underlines consistencies in the show's anthological structure. Roussève and seven performers make explicit the universality of Saudade's themes and bring authenticity to a wide variety of source material that flies headlong into realities of both triumph and despair.
