The Flaming Lips' emphasis on splendiferous spectacle and good-natured weirdness is potent enough that a critic recently questioned if it might be "an idea and a project as much as a band." Now, singer-cum-impresario Wayne Coyne invites you to celebrate Christmas on Mars. The group's long-awaited feature film — shot in and around Coyne's home in Oklahoma — is about what you'd expect from folks who gave us a quasi-concept album about battling robots: a bizarre, campy dose of science fiction that borders on the visionary. Featuring an "alien super being" sweeping in to save a beleagured crew of space colonists, this dose of lysergic holiday cheer is finally ready to relish any day of the year.
