Intimate Irish film Eden traces the unraveling of a hard-drinking, middle-class couple on their ten-year anniversary. Eager-to-please Breda has just successfully completed a weight-loss program in a bid to regain her husband's sexual desires, while phone repairman Billy spends his time downing pints at the pub and fantasizing about a friend's daughter. The exact plot is almost an afterthought amid a haunting Sea & Cake-esque score and scenes of blistering emotional shorthand: a wife watching her husband gaze at a younger woman; a self-destructive man drinking himself into oblivion; the risky, sure-to-be-regretted decision-making of social alcoholics and jilted lovers. An emotionally devastating denouement lends a heady and surprisingly honest edge to this heartwrenching falling-out-of-love story.
