Multimedia stage piece the break/s plays the globe like a record, with solo creator/performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph as the needle. The narrative finds him touching down in cities from Tokyo to Dakar: he fits in, sticks out, meets Prince, dances, and rhymes. He both represents and discovers hip-hop culture everywhere he goes, but wonders at the varying forms it takes. Meanwhile, musical bedrock by DJ Excess and beatboxer Soulati, along with Joseph's near-freakish versatility, sews the vignettes into something much bigger: a take on hip-hop as both a universal language and a mechanism by which culture can be repositioned.
