An important figure in contemporary art since the 1960s, Dan Graham has used a variety of media and methods throughout his career to scrutinize cultural systems such as suburbia, rock 'n roll, and television. While his early conceptual magazine spreads, such as the deadpan Homes for America (1967), earned him notice, his later works in a quasi-architectural mode are just as noteworthy and often more surprising. From his video installations of the 1970s, using closed-circuit technology and time delays, to his recent outdoor pavilions made of glass and mirrors, Graham makes the viewers part of the equation, mixing up the dynamics of audience and performer and underlining our subjective points of view. Tonight, the Urbana-born artist discusses his work, now on view in a major retrospective at LA's MoCA before it hits the road to other US museums.
