Interweaving the diverse voices of more than 40 characters, this stage production of playwright Robin Soans's The Arab-Israeli Cookbook offers an impression of daily life in Israel and the West Bank and how it's shaped by the ongoing conflict. A love of food serves as a common thread through the characters' stories, which are derived from Soans's interviews with ordinary people. Without denying the complexity of the divisive situation — or shying away from the shattering violence — the play uses cooking to draw out a sense of shared humanity and to illuminate longstanding traditions or singular customs. Meanwhile, interspersed with moments of substantial emotional weight, the personal reflections of a few particularly idiosyncratic characters provide welcome levity.
