In adjacent exhibitions, Stephen Daiter Gallery reunites Marvin Newman and Yasuhiro Ishimoto, two master photographers who became friends in the early '50s while studying at the renowned Institute of Design. Early street photographs hint at similar beginnings for the two men, and occasional echoes emerge — such as pictures of kids playing on the sidewalk — but collectively the photographs show how they followed different creative paths. Newman moved to New York and became a photojournalist, while Ishimoto returned to Japan and focused on more formal work, such as botantical studies and electric-colored abstractions. Different interests aside, the two share a well-honed eye for composition and visual form, and their bodies of work resonate in sometimes unexpected ways.
