Sandra Cisneros: The House on Mango Street

Coming-of-age tales are as eternal as adolescence feels. But the generational details they require can oftentimes end up dating even the best (Sorry, JD). Sandra Cisneros' locally-set House on Mango Street — One Book One Chicago's current selection — is now pushing 30, and it's aged as gracefully as we hope Esperanza, the novella's restless teenage protagonist, will. There's an awful lot to ponder in House's slice-of-life vignettes: sexuality, language, home, self-definition, and Cisneros' daring prose-poetry technique. Unlike in junior high, today you get a brilliant docent to help guide you along.
