DePaul Art Museum says…

Pairing a collection of small 19th-century photographs with larger works by contemporary artists, DePaul University's engaging group exhibition Double Exposure takes stock of how African Americans have been portrayed photographically in the past and how artists are reevaluating this visual history today. The emphasis shifts between personal experience and broader social concerns as the artists tackle a range of interrelated subjects. Some are looking back at family photo albums, for instance, while others undercut the stereotypes in well-known advertising campaigns or examine the oppressive functions of photographic archives. Intriguingly, the works frequently foreground the materiality of photographs, leading us to look at old images in new ways, as the artists print on cloth, incorporate symbolic objects, or write on the picture itself.
