A remarkable artist with a sensibility all his own, H.C. Westermann pursued themes of love, death, and catastrophe in his works from the 1960s and '70s. His meticulous wood sculptures and more jaunty prints and drawings feature motifs like the Death Ship and high-flying acrobats, which appear as both autobiographical references and independent figures. As the Smart Museum's Westermann show illuminates, the boundary quickly blurs between the works he made for a public audience and his creations for family and friends — whether gift objects or artful letters. And there lies the exhibition's lasting charm: pairing finished works with a bounty of sketches and ephemera, it leaves you feeling like you know the artist and his working process.
