A space western based on a canceled TV show might not be the first place you'd look for staunch support of women's rights, but Joss Whedon isn't your typical space-western director. A self-described feminist whose mother founded the first Amnesty International chapter run by high-school students, Whedon — best known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer — turned Serenity, the feature-length version of his TV show Firefly, over to fans keen to raise money for Equality Now. Three years and thousands of dollars later, the mission continues, and the awareness raised by cross-country screenings shows how six rebels on the run half a century in the future can change the world we live in today.
