Dr. Nussbaum hosts a discussion after the Saturday 4.25 screening.
Amid the economic gloom, universities are reporting a sharp enrollment surge in the "practical" majors (including finance and health) and a correlative drop in the less-remunerative humanities, like philosophy. But the nine philosophers showcased in Astra Taylor's thought-provoking Examined Life could help stem the exodus from philosophy classes across the country. Expounding on everything from gender politics and cultural theory to ecological ethics and moral philosophy, these ivory tower rock stars — including ethicist Peter Singer, intellectual Cornel West, and University of Chicago's Martha Nussbaum — reveal the unique ways philosophy can plumb the depths of real-world experience and help navigate the complex existential, political, and ethical concerns that confront our society.
