Geoffrey Todd Smith is unabashed in his efforts to dazzle the eyes. The artist's vivid works on paper lay out repeating rows of circles filled with narrow zigzagging lines, but he varies the color combinations to create different polychrome patterns and a range of effects. The results are almost hypnotic, conferring a bottled-up energy. From afar they look like impeccable prints — fresh from Adobe Illustrator, perhaps — but Smith actually draws the intricate forms by hand with off-the-shelf gel pens, a labor-intensive process that becomes evident at close range. The titles, modeled after Facebook status updates, further ground the works in the artist's personal domain, trumpeting Smith's supposed state of mind as he made each piece.
