The current economic crisis may make artist types fret over their prospects when even bankers are in trouble. The Rise of the Creative Class and Who's Your City? author Richard Florida has a thing or three to say about that. Cities thrive when they attract artists and entrepreneurs, he says, and innovation compounds exponentially when urban centers are densely populated with creative people (in a play on Thomas Friedman's "world-is-flat" globalization thesis, he believes that the world is, instead, "spiky" with most new advances concentrated in booming cities). Tonight, Florida discusses his economic theory of the creative class, and how Chicago is poised to be a hub for Next Big Things.
