With framed works leaning against the wall and a sculpture of a lectern overturned on the floor, Christopher Michlig's exhibition MAN MAN MAN evokes a state of flux, like a hideout quickly abandoned. Within this context, the artist engages language as a site of contestation and latent possibility. In eye-catching collages made from neon-colored posters found around Los Angeles, Michlig slices out words, replacing them with black patches (suggesting redaction) or colored fragments that match the background (suggesting erasure); the remaining words function as new exclamations or ciphers hinting at missing messages. The collages' material qualities heighten their effect: each has a slight covering of grime from its life on the street, while Michlig's knife-cut alterations create muted geometric patterns.
