Even if a battered economy puts large-scale art fairs on the endangered list, there's still plenty to see this year at Art Chicago and NEXT (a concurrent fair devoted to emerging art, including a special section of multiples, editions, and small artist presses called Goffo). The number of exhibitors is down, but with nearly 200 galleries presenting mini-exhibitions at the Merchandise Mart, you'd be hard-pressed to check out more new work in a single afternoon. For that matter, this might be a "less is more" situation, since the ocean of booths in past years could be overwhelming. Also, look for three special exhibitions on site, focused, respectively, on student artists from leading graduate programs, explorations of political action, and contemporary artists influenced by the Chicago Imagists.
