Gaylen Gerber's strategy is to play humble host and deft interlocutor at the same time. He invites other artists to include their work in "his" solo exhibitions, while adding elements that underscore the visual conventions and contexts that shape our encounters with art. What makes his current installation at Rowley Kennerk a gem is how fully it draws the tiny gallery space into the game. Opposite walls (each adorned with another artist's work) seem to face off with each other, staging different perceptual effects in vivid color and playing with the viewer's sense of where the artwork stops and the backdrop begins. Meanwhile, a room-filling sculpture by Scott Reeder, made of painted two-by-fours, disturbs the line of sight, rearing up like an angular obstacle course.
