Entertaining and cerebral, playwright Tom Stoppard made his name by giving intellectual pursuits a riveting life on stage. Rock 'n' Roll, his exhilarating recent play, follows suit, digging into Czech politics, philosophical questions, and the vicissitudes of ideology, as if academic discourse was a joyride with the top down and the radio blaring. But Stoppard's real song here is the human heart, as it gets entangled with the twists of history. Beginning in 1968, the play soars across two decades, tracking the intersections of Jan, a Czech student who loves his vinyl, and his mentor, Max, a pugnacious Marxist scholar. Rock music courses through it all: under an oppressive regime, it's a lifeline, a form of dissent — even freedom itself.
