When the Unicorns disbanded in 2004 after one marvelous album, they left a trail of indie-pop fans in mourning. Whether we realized it or not, we've been waiting for Clues. While other ex-Unicorns took new groups on the road, Alden Penner went underground in Montreal, where he quietly formed a new band with Brendan Reed, formerly of the Arcade Fire. Following a series of unadvertised local shows, they've surfaced with an album of careening pop songs, and of all the Unicorns offshoots, Clues come closest to carrying on their predecessor's antic spirit and offbeat hooks. Yet tracks like "Remember Severed Head," with its breathy chorus and walloping drums, find the band looking ahead and not just playing out their pedigrees.
